Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno 1980-1991
Ordained on June 15, 1957 and ministered in both Mexico and California. He was ordained as the third Bishop of Fresno on March 4, 1980. He started an educational television station and made KNXT Channel 49 a reality with its inaugural broadcast on November 2, 1986. In May 1991, Bishop Madera was appointed to the Archdiocese of the Military Services, Washington, D.C. and retired in 2004.
His final resting place is at St. Peter's Cemetery in Fresno.
Council #18221 Newly Formed
Divine Mercy has a new Knights of Columbus Council dedicated to the parish. Council #18221 adopted the name Bishop Joseph J Madera Council after the 3rd Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno.
